Philz Coffee, the Bay Area's go-to coffee shop for college students and a popular alternative to corporate chains such as Starbucks, has opened a new location in downtown Cupertino.

Already, the coffee shop has already been received with great fanfare -- by the time its doors opened Monday, Philz had eight four- and five-star reviews on Yelp, seven of which were posted weeks ago by impatient customers eager for the store to open.

The Bay Area coffee retailer is best know for its hand-crafted brews, offering more than 30 customized coffee blends and skipping many of the indulgent Frappuccinos and mass-produced lattes found at other chain coffee shops. Philz, which started in San Francisco, has four other South Bay locations, including one at Facebook headquarters, a shop each in Berkeley and Sausalito, and four more in San Francisco.

The Cupertino location is in the Cupertino Crossroads Shopping Center at 20686 Stevens Creek Blvd. Hours are Monday through Friday, 6 a.m. to 8:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 6:30 a.m .to 8 p.m.
