OAKLAND -- Workers at a recycling company found a heavily decomposed human skull in a pile of debris early Wednesday morning, police said.

Police were called around 8:46 a.m. to a California Waste Solutions facility at 1820 10th Street, where the skull, which was mummified, was discovered. Investigators were still trying to determine where the recycling load that contained the head was picked up; California Waste Solutions processes recycling material from across the Bay Area.

Officials did not immediately know if the head came from a man or woman, how or how long ago the person had died.

Investigators were still probing the area to see if there were any more remains.

Identifying the remains may take some time considering their condition, police said.
