SANTA CLARA — Safety Eric Reid's first day on the 49ers practice field produced humble rather than boastful aspirations for his rookie season.
"I don't expect, by any means, to start from Day 1. I want to earn it," Reid said Friday as a three-day rookie camp began.
When the 49ers traded up to draft Reid 18th overall on April 25, they envisioned him filling the void left by Dashon Goldson, a two-time Pro Bowl safety who signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in March.
Reid sees similarities between himself and Goldson, starting with their body types. Reid is 6-foot-1, 213 pounds; Goldson goes 6-2, 200.
"We have almost an identical body type. It's kind of weird," Reid said. "But I still have to prove myself."
Reid returned to LSU for conditioning with his old team after being drafted. Having received a playbook during his April 26 visit to the 49ers, Reid said it's put him "ahead of the curve a little."
