HAYWARD -- The 20th annual Asian American Heritage Festival will be held May 19 at City Hall Plaza.

Admission is free to the festival, which will feature more than 200 performers. The entertainment will include Hawaiian hula, Thai, Filipino, Taiwanese, Polynesian, Chinese and belly dancers. There also will be taiko drum performances, and food from various cultures will be available, said Jennifer Ong, one of the festival organizers.

"We want to educate the next generation of Asian-Americans and those outside the Asian-American community about our culture," she said.

This is the first year the festival will be held in Hayward. For the past 10 years, a Union City Buddhist temple hosted the event, Ong said.

The festival is sponsored by the city, the Asian American Federation of California, the Hayward Chamber of Commerce, the Taiwanese Chamber of Commerce of San Francisco Bay Area and State Farm Insurance.

The festival runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the plaza, 777 B St., Hayward. For more details, go to www.aafc-ca.org.
