Granada boys, SRV girls second at NCS The San Ramon Valley High girls team and Granada boys squad each finished in second place at the North Coast Section Swimming Championships on May 18 in Concord. Granada's boys had 229 points. San Ramon Valley's girls had 218. Granada freshman Maxime Rooney was second in both the 100-yard butterfly and 500 freestyle finals. Nick Silverthorn was second in the 200 freestyle and was third in the 100 breaststroke, in which Campolindo's Steven Stumph set a new national record with a mark of 53.39 seconds. Silverthorn's breaststroke time was 53.61, which also eclipsed the previous national record. Granada's boys were also second in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. San Ramon Valley's Heidi Poppe was first in the 100 breaststroke, and the Wolves won the 200 medley relay title.
Dons earn Tri-Valley track and field crown Amador Valley High's Matt Esparza won the shot put and discus titles at the North Coast Section Tri-Valley Area Track and Field Championships at Granada on May 18, helping the Dons take the boys team title. The Dons' Sam Peters won the 300 intermediate hurdles race. Darnell Roberson and Peters helped the 1,600-meter relay team prevail. Granada's Matt Tyler was first in the long jump and second in the high jump. In the girls meet, Dublin freshman Mecca McGlaston set a meet record in the 100 hurdles of 14.32 seconds, also breaking the Gaels' school record.

Amador Valley sizzles in NCS swimming Amador Valley High's Iris Brand won North Coast Section titles in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle in Concord, also helping the Dons' win the 200 freestyle relay title. Brand, along with her sister Kirsten, helped the Dons win the 200 freestyle relay championship, along with Lily Gribbel and Caitlyn Plattel. In the boys meet, Amador Valley's Jason Chen, who set two meet marks at the East Bay Athletic League championships, won the 100 backstroke title and took third in the 100 butterfly. Brian Hughes was third in the 200 freestyle.

On deck CIF Championships, track and field, May 31-June 1, 3 p.m. (May 31); 4:30 p.m. (June 1) -- One of the nation's top state track meets will be at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis.
Stars of the week Lauren Echsner, Dougherty Valley softball -- She had a dream game in a 17-7 victory over Las Lomas on May 16 in the Diablo Foothill Athletic League, as the winning pitcher who was 4 for 5 with a grand slam and seven RBIs, hitting for the cycle. Rick Emerson, Monte Vista lacrosse -- Emerson scored a game-high six goals as the Mustangs beat Davis 12-4 in the quarterfinals of the NCS Division I playoffs on May 18. Alicia Yoshino, Monte Vista softball -- The sophomore was 2 for 2 with a triple and three RBIs as the Mustangs beat rival San Ramon Valley 11-2 on May 16. Johanna Grauer, Amador Valley softball --Grauer tossed a perfect game and was 4 for 4 with two RBIs, helping the Dons rout rival Foothill 11-0 on May 16 to finish the EBAL season tied for first place with California. Mecca McGlaston, Dublin track and field -- The freshman phenom broke the meet record at the NCS Tri-Valley Championships on May 18 at Granada with a school-record time of 14.32 seconds.
