RICHMOND -- Two people sitting in a car Tuesday night were ambushed when someone sprayed the vehicle with gunfire, police said.

The pair, a male and female whose ages weren't released, were in a car about 11:30 p.m. in the 800 block of Virginia Avenue when someone fired more than 20 rounds from an assault rifle, possibly an AK-47, Richmond police Detective Nicole Abetkov said. The make of the vehicle was not released.

The male was grazed in the head by one of the bullets and after running from the vehicle came upon two officers who were in the area and had heard the shots, Abetkov said. He was taken to Kaiser Permanente's Richmond Medical Center where he was treated and released, Abetkov said.

The female in the vehicle was uninjured, Abetkov said. Police are investigating but did not have any suspects, police said.
