ANTIOCH -- The body of a patient at Sutter Delta Medical Center who left the hospital Monday night and jumped into the Contra Costa Canal near Lone Tree Way was found by a dive team Wednesday afternoon, according to a Contra Costa Water District spokeswoman.

The man's identity has yet to be released pending notification of next of kin, but water district spokeswoman Jennifer Allen said the man was found not far from where he went into the water.

According to the Contra Costa Fire Protection District, the man left Sutter Delta Medical Center and jumped into the canal on Lone Tree Way and James Donlon Boulevard shortly before 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Police and fire crews spent more than 2 hours looking for the person before handing off the search to Contra Costa County Water District patrol police.

Officials have not said why the person was in the hospital or why he left.
