ANTIOCH -- Authorities on Thursday identified a man who died after jumping into the Contra Costa Canal near Lone Tree Way on Monday night.

The body of 48-year-old Saul Hernandez of Brentwood was found by a dive team Wednesday afternoon, Contra Costa Water District spokeswoman Jennifer Allen said. The Contra Costa Coroner's office identified Hernandez and said an autopsy would determine whether he drowned.

The search for the man began Monday after Hernandez walked out of Sutter Delta Medical Center about 7:30 p.m. Monday and jumped into the canal.

According to Allen, Hernandez's body was found not far from where he entered the water at Lone Tree Way and James Donlon Boulevard.

Police and fire crews spent more than two hours looking for Hernandez before handing off the search to Contra Costa County Water District patrol police. Officials did not say why Hernandez was in the hospital or why he left.

On Thursday at about 10 a.m., a 53-year-old woman, who was taken to the hospital because she was under the influence of a controlled substance and threatening suicide, ran out of the hospital for an unknown reason, according to police. The woman was taken to a hospital in Martinez for a mental evaluation, police said.

Angela Lombardi, a hospital spokeswoman, said the Antioch hospital is not a lockdown facility, and patients are free to come and go.
