RICHMOND -- A 19-year-old Richmond man is facing felony DUI charges in a head-on collision in March that left one of his friends with such severe brain injuries she remains in the hospital, police said.
Police arrested Salvador Chavez Martinez on Thursday after a nearly two-month investigation into the March 28 two-car crash. Prosecutors have charged Martinez with felony DUI causing injuries and several enhancements due to the multiple people injured. His blood alcohol content was nearly double the legal limit for adults, police said. Under zero tolerance laws, anyone under 21, such as Martinez, cannot drive with any alcohol in their system.
Police say Martinez was driving his Chevy Camaro through a residential neighborhood on South 37th Street at Stege Aveue at 7:20 p.m. when it collided with a Chevy pickup truck, injuring a total of seven people. Witnesses said the Camaro was speeding before the crash. The speed limit is 25 mph on the street.
One woman in the Camaro was ejected, police said. She remains in the hospital with "traumatic brain injuries," said Richmond Police Department Detective Nicole Abetkov. Martinez suffered a broken leg.
