PITTSBURG -- A 56-year-old man was found dead with his kayak in the Brown's Island Regional Shoreline area Saturday, a Contra Costa County Sheriff's spokesman said.

At 3:30 p.m., an off-duty sheriff's deputy in his own boat participated in a search for a man reported missing Friday out of Pittsburg, according to sheriff's spokesman Jimmy Lee. A short time later, the off-duty officer found a man, deceased, along with a kayak.

The missing man was last seen Thursday taking his kayak out from the Pittsburg Marina, Lee added, and the sheriff's office as well as the U.S. Coast Guard had been searching for him for about 24 hours.

Lee said the Contra Costa coroner is still working to confirm the man found Saturday is the same man reported missing Thursday.

It is unknown at this time how the man died.
