ANTIOCH -- An 18-year-old Hayward man is recovering in the hospital after being hit by a car while riding a casterboard Wednesday afternoon.

At 4:53 p.m., Antioch police officers were called to an injury accident at the intersection of Pawnee and Indian Hills drives. When officers arrived, they found the teen in a semi-conscious state with serious injuries. He had been riding a "Rip Stick" -- a device similar to a skateboard, but with only two wheels -- without wearing a helmet, police said.

Police said the rider went through a stop sign at the intersection and collided with a car traveling westbound on Indian Hills Drive.

The man broadsided the car and was thrown about 30 feet. He was taken by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries and was expected to make a full recovery, according to police.

Police said they did not believe that alcohol was a factor in the collision.
