OAKLEY -- Fire officials say a family is safe but their home is destroyed and their two dogs are dead after a Saturday morning house fire in a residential neighborhood about a mile southeast of Bethel Island.

Fire crews were called at 7:20 a.m. to a single-family home on the 5500 block of Sandmound Boulevard between Mariner and East Cypress roads after a report of a fire, said East Contra Costa Fire Protection District Chief Hugh Henderson.

Fire crews arrived and had the two-alarm blaze under control in about 40 minutes.

A family that lived in the home made it safely out of the house, but their two dogs were killed in the fire, Henderson said.

Henderson said the home, valued at about $300,000, was destroyed.

The cause and origin of the fire remained under investigation Saturday.
