The Giants have signed their No. 1 draft pick, Florida high school shortstop Christian Arroyo. It's being reported by Baseball America that the 25th overall pick received $1,866,500.
A tweet from Arroyo said, "Proud to officially be a San Francisco Giant. Time to get to AT&T park ASAP and win a ring! Thanks for the support #SFgiants"
Baseball America rated Arroyo as the 102nd best prospect in the draft. The 6-foot-1, 180-pounder, who is turning down a baseball scholarship from the University of Florida by signing with the Giants, will begin his career with the Giants at short, but several scouts question whether he will stay at the position.
Keith Law of ESPN wrote that Arroyo has below average speed and doesn't have the footwork to play at short. Law projected Arroyo winding up at second base or catcher.
The Giants have said he was taken more for his offensive potential.
