BERKELEY -- A 21-year-old Oakland man has been arrested in connection with a February slaying in Berkeley, police said Tuesday night.

Jevon Calland, 21, of Oakland, is being held on suspicion of fatally shooting Zontee Jones, 34, who had addresses in Berkeley and Richmond, according to Berkeley police Officer Jennifer Coats. Berkeley police had sought an arrest warrant after determining Calland had killed Jones, but Calland was arrested by Alameda County Sheriff's deputies Sunday in Hayward on unrelated charges.

Jones was found dying on the pavement in front of an apartment complex on Delaware Street, just west of San Pablo Avenue shortly after 11 a.m. Feb. 4. He was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

Berkeley police took custody of Calland from the sheriff's department and booked him into Berkeley City Jail.

Jones's girlfriend said shortly after his death that he had worked as a maintenance man at her apartment building on Delaware Street, and the two had been together about six months.

The case has been forwarded to the Alameda County District Attorney's office and Calland could be charged later this week. Detectives also served a search warrant in Antioch Tuesday morning related to the case, but did not release further details.
