SAN MATEO -- A man found dead in his Mercedes down a Highway 101 embankment early Wednesday apparently suffered a "medical emergency," police said.

The San Mateo County coroner identified the man as Martin McGinn, 55, of Foster City.

An officer spotted the car crashed off the southbound side of the freeway just south of the Hillsdale Boulevard exit around 4:05 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Art Montiel said.

Fire crews pronounced McGinn dead at the scene. The car's headlights and motor were still running when police found the car.

Montiel said it appearsMcGinn died due to a "medical emergency" and not because of the crash. However, no final cause of death has been determined and the wreck remains under investigation.
