PLEASANT HILL -- A gas leak caused by a construction crew shut down a stretch of Buskirk Avenue Thursday morning, officials said.

The crew was digging with a backhoe in a vacant lot near Buskirk Avenue and Elmira Lane when it hit and ruptured a 2-inch gas line around 9 a.m., said PG&E spokeswoman Tamar Sarkissian.

No one was injured and no nearby buildings were evacuated, but police shut down Buskirk Avenue to traffic between Monument Boulevard and Hookston Road. The vacant lot is near office buildings and a strip mall.

The leak was contained around 11 a.m., Pleasant Hill police Sgt. David Downs said.
