RICHMOND -- Two pets died and two others were rescued in a fire that extensively damaged a two-story home on Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Firefighters rescued a cat and a dog and another dog in the backyard was not harmed in the one-alarm fire reported at 12:47 p.m. on the 5200 block of Nevin Avenue, east of Interstate 80, said Contra Costa Fire District fire inspector George Laing. Two cats died in the fire.
Neighbors reported seeing flames on a deck in the rear of the home shortly after PG&E crews turned power back on in the area, Laing said.
Investigators have not yet established the cause or origin of the fire. Laing said a damage estimate was not immediately available.
No one was home at the time of the blaze. It was controlled at 1:30 p.m. and did not spread to additional homes, Laing said.
