OAKLAND -- A 4-year-old girl fell 20 to 30 feet from a window at a home in the Fruitvale district Thursday afternoon, police said.

The name of the girl was not released. She was unconscious at first but regained consciousness shortly after the fall, police said.

She was taken by ambulance to Children's Hospital Oakland for treatment, but her condition was not immediately available Thursday evening. A person who saw her fall from the window to the concrete jumped over a fence and held the girls' head still until paramedics arrived, according to media reports.

Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said police are still investigating and it's unclear how exactly the girl fell. It appears to be an accident, Watson said.

The fall was reported at 4:28 p.m. at the home in the 1500 block of 23rd Avenue, police said. There are conflicting reports about whether the child fell from a second or third-story window.
