EL CERRITO -- A water main that broke twice in the last 24 hours has left roughly 200 people without water, officials said Friday.

The line initially broke Thursday night around 9 p.m. in the 6600 block of Schmidt Lane, said EBMUD spokesman Charles Hardy. Crews fixed the break, but at 6 p.m. Friday, the main broke again in the same area, near the Richmond Annex, he said.

While this kind of occurrence is not unusual, Hardy added, the fact that roughly 200 people are without running water does present a problem.

"For us, that is a huge problem," he said.

At some point during crews' attempt to fix the water main, sewage spilled into the line, dirtying the water, Hardy said. The contamination means that repairs will take longer, and crews will have to test the water before turning service back on.

Residents are expected to have running water back around 2 a.m. Saturday, Hardy said.

It is unknown what caused the line to break.
