SAN JOSE -- Officers are investigating the Sunday afternoon assault and attempted robbery of a teenage couple as a gang-related attack, according to police.

Police said the 16-year-old boy was walking with his girlfriend on Lido Avenue near King Road and Emma Prusch Farm Park around 3:45 p.m. when a group of teens approached them and tried to take the girl's purse, and then began to assault her, said San Jose police Sgt. Jason Dwyer.

The boy defended his girlfriend from the attack and suffered a cut to the head from an unspecified sharp weapon. The boy's injury was not considered life-threatening.

The other boys fled the scene before police arrived. Dwyer said both the victim and the attacker in the case are believed to have gang connections.
