FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- The Department of Defense says a soldier assigned to the Army's 10th Mountain Division based in northern New York has been killed in Afghanistan.

Pentagon officials announced Monday night that 28-year-old Spc. Javier Sanchez Jr. of Greenfield died Sunday in Sar Rowzah, Afghanistan of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device while on mounted patrol.

Sanchez was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team based at Fort Drum.
