Jan MacPherson Memorial Tournament
The Pleasanton 12B Mighty Phantom girls softball team won six consecutive games en route to being crowned champions of the Jan MacPherson Memorial Tournament held on May 25-27.
After defeating the Petaluma Steal Breeze, in their third game of pool, the Mighty Phantom faced Steal Breeze in the championship game and won by a score of 17-4. The Mighty Phantom exploded for 11 runs in the first inning and never looked back. Michaela Cabral (2 HR, 2 R, 5 RBI) hit two home runs in the first inning, Hope Alley added a three-run double, and Aliya Lubrin added a two-run single. Malia Konig also had a multi-hit day, including a triple in the third inning.
In bracket play, the Phantom defeated the Palo Alto Heat, 13-3, behind strong a pitching performance from Libby Schlag and big contributions at plate by Lauren Hermes (3 1B, 4 RBI), Brooke Promes (1B, HR, 4 RBI) and Kaitlyn Jones (2B, HR, BB, 2 RBI). The Phantom carried the momentum into the semifinal match against the Union City Fury, and were once again victorious by a score of 16-4. In the first inning, Lauren Hermes sparked the Phantom offense with a two-run home run. Pitcher Rachel Pettey was strong on the mound and she also helped her cause at the plate. Pettey and Kaityn Jones hit key triples, while Jessica Shockley and Ellen Ebbers contributed doubles. Hope Alley capped off the scoring with a home run.
In pool play, the Phantom first defeated the Benicia Outlaws 5-2. Pitcher Rachel Pettey held the Outlaws scoreless for the first three innings, while Hope Alley (3 for 3, 2 RBI) and Michaela Cabral (1B, RBI) led the offensive attack.
In their second game of pool play, the Phantom defeated the Palo Alto Heat 6-2. For the Phantom, Libby Schlag was dominant on the mound, while Brooke Promes (3 RBI) propelled the offense with a two-run double and a bunt single, which she eventually scored on after stealing home.
In the their third game, the Phantom destroyed the Petaluma Steal Breeze 15-2. Petaluma jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but Phantom pitcher, Rachel Pettey, held the Breeze scoreless for the remainder of the game. Offensive highlights for the Phantom came from: Lauren Hermes (1B, HR), Michaela Cabral (3B, HR), Malia Konig (HR), Abby Curlett (1B, 2 BB), Ellen Ebbers (2B, BB), Aliya Lubrin (2 1B), Kaitlyn Jones (1B, BB), Libby Schlag (1B) and Hope Alley (1B).
Beach Soccer Blast
The boys U10 Livermore Land Sharks (beach soccer team) took first place at the Beach Soccer Blast held at Ocean Beach in San Francisco on June 23.
Their undefeated tournament run included these matches: Livermore Land Sharks 11, FC Strikers 0; LLS 7, Hillcrest Hawks Blue 2; LLS 6, All City United 4; Championship game: LLS 6, Novato United Green 5.
In the beach soccer off-season players from the Land Sharks play on grass and turf for Livermore Fusion SC. The roster consists of: Coach Dave Moore, Joey Keller, Dylan Baxter, Trent Wagner, Dane Winslow, Aiden Lewis, Coach Tim Baxter, Logan Arlt, Parker Moore, Landon Ratinho and Colton Trudeau.
The Beach Soccer Blast is produced by the nonprofit organization: America SCORES Bay Area. Proceeds from the event went directly to under-served Bay Area youth through quality after-school soccer and educational enrichment programs, which are provided to over 1,000 inner-city public school children.
