A man was killed in a Thursday night rollover crash that sparked a vegetation fire off a private road in the hills south of San Jose, authorities said.

According to the Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office, they were called to the scene off San Felipe Road around 9:35 p.m., where a car had apparently gone off the roadway and into a ravine.

The California Highway Patrol reported that it was a Jeep, and that two people had been ejected, one of them suffering the fatal injuries. The victim's wife was also in the vehicle at the time, according to the CHP, and was one of three people who survived the crash.

Their conditions were not immediately known. No further information about the man who died in the crash was available, and the coroner was still at the scene late Thursday.

Cal Fire crews were initially called to the area of San Felipe and Metcalf roads at 7:50 p.m., but the actual accident site was at a location two miles to the east. Firefighters started working on the fire, which grew to six acres before they surrounded and contained it.

Cal Fire officials said there were access issues and it took them about an hour to find the vehicle.
