The NOAA research ship Bell M. Shimada arrived at Pier 15 at the Exploratorium in San Francisco on June 28 after 23 days at sea. The ship conducts oceanographic research including monitoring protected species, observing weather and marine animal populations. She is 208.6 feet long, with a breadth of 49.2 feet, and can cruise 12,000 nautical miles at a speed of 12 knots. Her crew consists of five commissioned officers, four engineers, 24 crew and 15 scientists. The ship will be in port through July 1 and will head to her home port of Newport, Ore. afterwards.

Tours of the ship will be given to the public on Sunday, June 30, from 1-4 p.m. Entries are limited and visitors must wear flat closed-toed shoes.
