The Colorado Avalanche selected center Nathan MacKinnon of the Halifax Mooseheads with the No. 1 overall pick in Sunday's NHL Draft at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

McKinnon, considered an exceptional skater, puck handler and a fierce competitor, had 75 points in 44 games for Halifax this season.

Florida chose Finnish center Aleksander Barkov with the second pick in the first round, surprising some who expected the Panthers to take defenseman Seth Jones of the Portland Winterhawks.

Left wing Jonathan Drouin of Halifax went No. 3 overall to the Tampa Bay Lightning, and Jones, son of former NBA player Popeye Jones, slipped to No. 4 to the Nashville Predators.

Center Elias Lindholm of Sweden was the No. 5 pick overall, going to the Carolina Hurricanes.
