HAYWARD -- A 33-year-old man arrested on an outstanding warrant died Monday night after struggling with jail staff at the Hayward Police Department, police said Tuesday.

Police said the man had caused a disturbance about 10:55 p.m. at the McDonald's Restaurant at 23989 Watkins St. and officers found him in front of the eatery, Hayward police Sgt. Eric Melendez said. Police then discovered the arrest warrant and took him into custody.

Police did not say what the arrest warrant was for. The man was taken to the Hayward jail for booking, when "there was an altercation," Melendez said. "Shortly after that, a medical situation took place."

The man collapsed in the jail, and resuscitation attempts by jail personnel and paramedics were unsuccessful, Melendez said. He was pronounced dead after being taken via ambulance to Saint Rose Hospital, Melendez said.

The man's identity was withheld pending notification of family.
