OAKLAND -- Crews were called Thursday night to fight two fires close to each other in Joaquin Miller Park believed to have been sparked by illegal fireworks.

The blazes charred 1 1/2 acres and destroyed a cabin at a Girl Scout camp, but it was not known the camp was active, officials said.

The fires were reported about 11:40 p.m. near the 6000 block of Castle Drive and at one point were at 2 alarms and 65 firefighters, from Oakland, East Bay Regional Park District and Cal Fire were called to the scene. The fires were contained about 3:40 a.m. the crews remained Friday morning to make sure there were no flare ups.

There were no ordered evacuations of nearby residences, police said, although some people left on their own temporarily.

No injuries were reported.
