OAKLAND -- More than 100 marijuana plants were found and two puppies were rescued Friday morning at a two-story Victorian home that caught fire in East Oakland, possibly sparked by illegal fireworks that landed in the rear of the building.

The blaze was reported about 6:20 a.m. at the house in the 1100 block of E. Eighth Street. It took 19 firefighters less than 15 minutes to control the fire. Crews discovered marijuana plants in at least two rooms of the house and an addition, officials said.

Oakland police were called to the scene and were interviewing a man who lived at the home. No one was injured, but firefighters rescued two puppies from the home.

The marijuana plants were in various stages of growth and police had not found any documentation indicating that the plants were being grown legally.
