ATHERTON -- A pedestrian was struck and killed Friday by a Caltrain, disrupting service during the morning commute, the transit agency said.
The incident was reported about 7:30 a.m. at the Atherton station, which is between the Redwood City and Menlo Park stations but is only in operation on Saturdays.
Service was stopped in both directions, and trains were sharing the southbound track for about two hours as investigators from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office examined the collision site and the coroner took the body.
What the man -- who has not yet been identified -- was doing on the tracks remains unclear. Trains do not stop at that station on weekdays.
Caltrain has been one of the public-transit providers shouldering the displacement of commuters stemming from the BART strike.
