Talk about taking your career in New Directions. Adam Lambert, the former "American Idol" sensation, is joining the cast of "Glee."

The news was revealed on Wednesday via Twitter when series creator Ryan Murphy tweeted: "I am thrilled to announce that the super talented Adam Lambert is joining the cast of 'Glee' this fall."

Lambert becomes the latest "American Idol" alum to appear on the Fox musical. Last season, "Idol" runner-up Jessica Sanchez had a multiple-episode arc as a diva for a rival high school glee club.

There was no word yet on what kind of character Lambert will play, or where he'll be located -- in Ohio, New York, or elsewhere.

The "Glee" gig is apparently a dream come true for Lambert, who dominated Season 8 of "Idol" before finishing second. Last year, he told the Hollywood Reporter that the show is "charming" and "irresistible," and "really paints a picture of what it's like to be an arts kid in high school." He said at the time that he'd love to be able to play himself on the show.

Lambert played himself -- and performed -- on the 2012 Halloween episode of "Pretty Little Liars." Recently, his name was raised in speculation surrounding possible candidates for the new judges' panel on "Idol."
