PLEASANTON -- A Hayward man killed when his driver veered her car off an embankment and into a tree on northbound Interstate 680 Wednesday was identified as 67-year-old Boyd Fowler, authorities said.

The man was sitting in the passenger seat of the 2000 Honda CR-V just before 5:30 p.m. when for unknown reasons, the 74-year-old woman careened off the right side of the road and down an embankment at about 65 mph, CHP Officer Steve Creel said. After careening down the hill just south of Bernal Avenue, the car crashed into a large tree at the bottom of the embankment, killing the man on impact and seriously injuring the woman.

According to Creel, both Fowler and the woman were wearing their seat belts at the time of the crash, and investigators determined that alcohol was not a factor. The woman's condition is unknown at this time, and the crash remains under investigation.
