UNIQLO, a Japan-based casual clothing retailer, is planning new stores in the South Bay, East Bay, San Francisco and on the Peninsula, bringing new jobs to the Bay Area.
The stores will be at Valley Fair Mall in San Jose/Santa Clara, Bay Street in Emeryville, Hillsdale Shopping Center in San Mateo and Stonestown Galleria in western San Francisco. They are all due to open this fall.
"The malls UNIQLO has chosen are all big regional malls," said tom Nelson, a vice president with Colliers International, a commercial realty brokerage. "They are all in top-tier trade areas. Valley Fair is one of the top five malls in the country."
The first UNIQLO store in the Bay Area opened last October in San Francisco's Union Square district.
"There is plenty of spendable cash in Silicon Valley and other parts of the Bay Area," said Tom Spilsbury, a broker with Meacham/Oppenheimer, a commercial realty firm. "The Bay Area is a strong market for retail expansion."
The stores opening in the Bay Area are part of an expansion that will add 10 UNIQLO stores nationwide during the fall. At present, the retailer has seven U.S. stores.
"UNIQLO is ready to take our next step in our U.S. expansion by opening more smaller format and mall stores in the regions surrounding our current flagships stores" in the New York City and San Francisco areas, said Larry Meyer, chief operating officer of UNIQLO's USA business.
