ANTIOCH -- A husband and wife from Antioch were arraigned Friday in a case that police say may involve the sexual abuse of several young family members.
Johnny Montanez, 38, was charged late Thursday with six felony counts of aggravated sexual assault on a child for crimes between Aug. 1, 2007 and July 31, 2008, according to the Contra Costa District Attorney's Office. Johnny and his wife Carol Montanez, 38, are each charged with four misdemeanor counts of child endangerment for offenses that allegedly occurred Tuesday.
Police said they arrested the couple Tuesday morning during a traffic stop on Highway 4 at Lone Tree Way. Before prosecutors filed the felony charges, Johnny Montanez was being held in County Jail on suspicion of sodomy of a victim under 10 years of age, child cruelty resulting in possible injury or death, and incest. Carol Montanez was held on one count of child cruelty resulting in possible injury or death.
The couple remained jailed Friday; Johnny Montanez's bail is $6 million, and his wife's is $250,000. The charges against Johnny Montanez call for up to 150 years to life in prison, said deputy district attorney Alison Chandler.
Husband and wife were arraigned side by side Friday afternoon in a Martinez courtroom, but neither entered a plea.
Johnny Montanez was accepted as a client of the Public Defender's Office at the hearing, and Carol Montanez was referred to Contra Costa County's Alternate Defender's Office.
The couple have been ordered to return to court Tuesday for further arraignment.
Police and prosecutors declined to release further details about the case, citing an ongoing investigation. Anyone with information regarding this case can call the Antioch Police Department at 925-779-6937.
