SAN JOSE -- A California Highway Patrol motorcycle officer was not seriously injured after crashing off Interstate 880 in West San Jose on Tuesday morning, the agency said.
The officer was one of two motorcycle units who exited onto Bascom Avenue from southbound I-880 traveling between 40 and 45 mph when a Suzuki Sidekick pulled out of a driveway and into their path around 6:30 a.m. One of the officers was able to avoid it, but the other ran into the rear of the vehicle, said Officer Ryan Fifield.
The veteran officer was thrown onto the roadway and was taken to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center for complaints of pain but is expected to recover, Fifield said.
The 19-year-old man driving the Suzuki stopped at the scene and cooperated with authorities. Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash, which remains under investigation.
