OAKLAND -- A 28-year-old San Jose woman was shot in the ankle Tuesday night in East Oakland after she refused to give up her purse to a robber, police said.

The incident happened about 10 p.m. Tuesday in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue.

The woman was standing on the sidewalk when a car stopped and a man got out and demanded her purse.

When she refused to give it to him she was shot in the ankle, police said. The suspect then fled in the car.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she was in stable condition and was expected to be released soon.
