SANTA CRUZ -- A 33-year-old man was found dead on the San Lorenzo River levee near Soquel Avenue early Monday morning.

The death does not appear suspicious, said Santa Cruz Deputy Police Chief Steve Clark. The man was a Santa Cruz transient and the death appeared to be a drug overdose, according to police.

A woman was walking along the levee before 6 a.m. when she spotted the man on the north side of the Soquel Avenue bridge near Front Street, Clark said. She went to the Santa Cruz Police Station on Center Street to report it about 6 a.m.

Police looked in the bushes and found the man about 6:45 a.m. A syringe lay next to him, and it did not appear he had been camping there, Clark said.

Police said the man appeared to have been dead for several hours based on his condition. He was not taken to a hospital.

Police have not yet released the man's identity.
