MARTINEZ -- Two people who police say tried to outrace the California Highway Patrol on Highway 4 early Friday morning crashed their vehicle and were hospitalized with major injuries, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The eastbound chase occurred around 1 a.m., when a CHP patrol car tried to pull over a Toyota Solara that was driving recklessly, CHP Officer Ron Simmons said. The Toyota lost control at Alhambra Avenue and crashed, Turner said.

An update on the conditions of the two individuals in the Toyota was not immediately available. The driver was taken by ambulance to Highland Hospital in Oakland and the passenger was airlifted to a Fairfield hospital.
