LAFAYETTE -- Police were still searching the Lamorinda area Tuesday afternoon for a man who stole a car and then tried to evade capture by hiding in a child's room hours earlier in Moraga.

Around 6:10 a.m., Moraga police responded to a report of a stolen car on Camino Peral. A responding officer, driving southbound on Moraga Road, saw the vehicle, a 1997 Honda Civic, driving northbound on Moraga Road near the Commons Park.

When the officer made a U-turn to stop the driver, the car sped away. As the officer was trying to catch up to the car, the driver, lost control and crashed into a wall at the northeast corner of the Moraga Road and Rheem Boulevard intersection. The driver then kicked out a window and run into the 24 Hour Fitness club on Rheem Boulevard, heading out through a back door.

The suspect then ran into a home on Dolores Court through an open garage door. The man tried to hide in a child's bedroom, with the child still inside the room, before going back into the garage to hide.

Police said the suspect was confronted by the child's father in the garage and then fled the area. Neither the child nor the father were assaulted or threatened in any way.

During a search of the car the man abandoned at the start of the chase, officers found stolen items, indicating the suspect was in the area burglarizing vehicles, police said.

The suspect is described as a white male adult in his mid-twenties with a shaved head and no facial hair. He is approximately 5 feet 10 inches tall with a medium build. He was last seen wearing a white tee shirt and baggy jeans.

Shortly after 2:30 p.m., Lafayette police reported that they were searching for a suspect with the same description in the area of Solana and Acampo drives. About an hour later, authorities said they had not found the man.

Anyone with information on the incident can contact the Moraga Police Department at 925-888-7055 ext. 0.
