CASTRO VALLEY -- Trustees on Tuesday unanimously appointed Gary Howard to fill a school board vacancy.
Howard, a scientist at Gladstone Institutes in San Francisco, has been an active school volunteer and past president of the Castro Valley Education Foundation. He will take office Aug. 16.
He fills the vacancy created when George Granger resigned from the board because he was moving out of the district to accept a job. The term runs through November 2014.
The board interviewed 11 applicants and chose Howard on its fourth vote Tuesday.
