CROCKETT -- A 15-year-old girl escaped serious injury Wednesday after being hit by a pickup truck near the entrance to John Swett High School, a California Highway Patrol officer said.
The incident happened on Pomona Street in front of the school at 7:21 a.m. after the teen's parents dropped her off, CHP Officer John Franzen said. The girl was in a crosswalk, trying to cross from a sidewalk, when a 2002 Ford pickup hit her, he said.
The driver left the scene initially, Fransen said, but a passenger in the truck stayed and convinced him to return. The driver has not been arrested, Fransen said.
"He said the sun was in his eyes and that he couldn't see her," Fransen said.
The driver wasn't speeding, Fransen said, and that prevented the accident from being worse. The girl, who was complaining of pain, was taken to a hospital as a precaution, Fransen said. She was expected to be released later Wednesday.
