ANTIOCH -- One person is dead and a second was critically injured in a major crash Friday night, police said.
Lt. John VanderKlugt said police responded to reports of a collision at 7:09 p.m. on Sterling Hill Drive and Hillcrest Avenue. When officers arrived, they found two males that were riding in a silver sedan had been ejected.
One person was declared dead at the scene and the second was flown to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek where he was undergoing surgery late Friday. His condition was not immediately known.
VanderKlugt said one appeared to be under the age of 18 and the second was believed to a young adult, but it was unclear who was driving the car and who was the passenger.
The cause of the crash is under investigation, but speed does appear be a significant factor, police said.
VanderKlugt, who was at the scene for some time, said the damage to the vehicle was "extremely extensive."
Hillcrest Avenue remained closed for several blocks in both directions while crews worked to clear the scene. The road was expected to reopen shortly.
