OAKLAND -- A 39-year-old man who died while helping a stranded motorist in East Oakland on Friday was identified by the Alameda County Coroner on Sunday.

According to police, Jose Antonio Durante, 39, of Pittsburg, was helping the motorist push a car in the 2200 block of International Boulevard around 10:07 p.m. Friday when he was struck by another car.

Police said the driver who hit Durante left his vehicle behind and ran away on foot but was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving and suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs. He could face other charges, as well, police said.
