PITTSBURG -- A 2-year-old girl hit by an SUV when she ran out into the road after a bouncing ball remained in serious condition at Children's Hospital Oakland on Tuesday morning, police said.
The toddler suffered head trauma when she was hit in the 100 block of Jimno Avenue around 6:05 p.m. Monday, Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman said. She was running after a ball that had bounced into the street when the SUV struck her, Raman said.
The girl's family was visiting friends when the collision happened, Raman said. Neither alcohol nor speed appeared to be factors in the crash, he said.
The toddler was hit less than 12 hours after a sport utility vehicle hit and killed 12-year-old Burgess Hu in the eastern Contra Costa County town of Byron. Hu was hit by an SUV pulling out of his middle school.
In both instances, the drivers of the SUVs said they did not see the children. Neither driver has been charged with any wrongdoing.
