A 21-year-old woman was arrested Thursday on allegations she stole a U-Haul truck in Richmond and led police on a chase into Marin before ditching the truck in Novato.
Shyra Bryant, a Richmond resident, was taken into custody after police found her hiding in a yard near De Long Avenue and Adrienne Street, said Novato police Lt. Oliver Collins.
The truck was stolen Thursday morning from a U-Haul rental site on 23rd Street, said Richmond police Lt. Arnold Threets. Police chased the truck for seven to eight miles as it blew through several stop signs, then followed it over the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge, Threets said.
Richmond police turned the pursuit over to the California Highway Patrol, which, for reasons unclear, abandoned the chase but notified other agencies about the truck.
At about 11:30 a.m., Novato police spotted the truck parked near Adrienne Street with its door open and no one inside. Police searched the area and found Bryant a short time later.
Police do not suspect the truck had any other occupants. Bryant was turned over to Richmond police for booking at the Contra Costa County Jail in Martinez.
The CHP sergeant who oversaw the response in Marin could not be reached.
