Gov. Jerry Brown announced Tuesday he will seek a 60-day-extension of a ban on strikes in the AC Transit bus system.
At Brown's direction, state lawyers Wednesday morning will ask Alameda County Superior Court Judge Evelio Grillo to bar bus drivers, mechanics and dispatchers from striking during a 60-day cooling-off period.
Members of Amalgamated Transit Union Local 192 threatened to strike after twice voting down tentative contract agreements reached by union and management negotiators.
Brown last week used his executive powers to ban a strike for a seven-day period that ends Wednesday. He needs a court order for a 60-day extension.
Bus drivers have said they are upset with shootings and stabbings on the bus system, inadequate time for meal and bathroom breaks, and proposals requiring employees to start paying a portion of their medical insurance premiums.
