SAN LEANDRO -- An elderly man was fatally hit by an Amtrak train Wednesday morning on tracks in San Leandro, officials said.

Police responded about 9:10 a.m. to the 14300 block of Washington Avenue after a caller reported a pedestrian had been hit by a train, Lt. Randy Brandt said. The man, who has not been identified but is thought to be about 70 years old, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses said the man was walking west from the east curb line of Washington Avenue when the Amtrak train, traveling south to San Jose from Sacramento, hit the man at high speed, Lt. Jeff Tudor said.

"This is a tragic accident," Tudor said. "Our thoughts go out to all those involved in this incident."

Motorists were advised to avoid the area of Washington Avenue from 143rd Avenue to Floresta Boulevard Wednesday while the investigation is in progress.
