RICHMOND -- A man apparently trying to cross Interstate 580 in Richmond was struck and killed Saturday, the California Highway Patrol said.

Calls to authorities began pouring in at 9:35 p.m., first reporting that the man was on the south shoulder of I-580. Next, callers said he crossed the eastbound lanes toward the center median, according to the CHP. At 9:45 p.m., callers said the man had been struck by several cars.

The CHP found him in the number two lane of westbound I-580. Medics performed first aid, but were unsuccessful. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Westbound I-580 was closed for nearly three hours while the CHP investigated.

The investigation remains active and the highway patrol asks anyone with information on the incident to call the Oakland office at 510-450-3821.
