WALNUT CREEK -- Fire crews extinguished a one-alarm fire Wednesday that destroyed a garage and damaged much of a two-story house, authorities said.

Nobody was injured in the blaze that broke out at the home in the 2100 block of San Luis Road, just off N. Main Street, around 11:40 a.m., Fire Inspector and spokeswoman Lisa Martinez said. The lone occupant of the home was out of the country, she said.

Two cars in the garage were destroyed, as was the garage itself, though Martinez said crews had not made a monetary estimate of the damages. The property had more than one structure on it, and flames and smoke damaged much of the house.

Wild vegetation was close to the property, but Fire Capt. Robert Marshall said the lack of wind and the mild temperatures kept the fire from spreading. The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Martinez said.
