HAYWARD -- A teenager was fatally shot Monday afternoon near the baseball diamond at Centennial Park, authorities said.

Officers responded to the park at 24000 Amador Street after a caller reported hearing gunshots at 3:27 p.m., Sgt. Ken Forkus said. When they arrived, they discovered a 17-year-old boy lying unconscious near the baseball diamond.

The teen, who police say was a Hayward resident but not registered within the Hayward Unified School District, was taken to the hospital, where he died at 4:10 p.m.

Police are interviewing several witnesses, some who say they heard the shooting and some who claim to have seen it, Forkus said. While it appears the teen was accompanied by at least one friend, it was not immediately known what they were doing in the park.

Investigators were working Monday night to identify a suspect and possible motive, Forkus said. Anyone with information may contact the Hayward Police Department at 510-293-7000.
