Wood fires will be banned in the Bay Area on Christmas Day during another Spare the Air alert for poor air quality.
This will be the third Spare the Air alert on consecutive days and the 18th alert of the cold season issued by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District.
Stagnant area is trapping smoke and other fine particles in air near the ground. The air district predicts unhealthy air throughout the region, with the worst air quality in the Santa Clara Valley.
The penalty for a first burn ban offense is $100 or attendance of an online smoke class. A second offense costs the violator $500.
